If you have been dealing with mould illness and chronic inflammation, you may have experienced any of the following:
- "It’s all in your head"… you may have heard a doctor say after you’ve explained your symptoms
- "I feel I am going crazy"… you may have thought at various times, as mould and trauma wreaked havoc in your life
- "I’m so exhausted"… you may have managed to utter as you fall on the couch for the umpteenth time to have a 4 hours nap in the middle of the day
- "My stupid body is at war with me"… you may have heard yourself say
- "I’m not getting any better"… you may have cried out to your naturopath or integrative GP as months of treatment don’t yield the expected results
- "Nowhere is safe"… you may have been secretly feeling deep down as you navigate life, work, relationships, where everything feels exhausting and extremely difficult.
What is mould illness/CIRS?
Mould illness is a subcategory of Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS), a condition with a wide range of symptoms triggered by a biotoxin. CIRS emphasises the body inflammatory response the immune system puts in place to deal with the toxins, which then affects multiple bodily systems and often continues even when you’re not exposed anymore.
Mould illness happens after exposure to the interior environment of a water-damaged building, which hosts a toxic mix of moulds, microbes, and harmful chemicals.
Not everybody is affected in the same way. In fact, only 25% of the population is genetically predisposed to develop CIRS/mould illness and previous trauma is increasingly observed in clinical spaces as a factor contributing to this vulnerability.
Mould illness is not mould allergy. Mould allergy happens when mould spores cause an allergic reaction resulting in upper respiratory symptoms, such as asthma or irritation of the eyes, throat, sinuses, inner ear and lungs.
How mould illness/CIRS affects you
CIRS/Mould illness can directly impact the immune system, hormonal balance and how the brain and nerves work. Symptoms are broad and varied – and often can be missed and misdiagnosed.
- Fatigue
- Weakness
- Headaches
- Weight gain
- Body temperature dysregulation
- Gut issues (leaky gut, SIBO etc.)
- Histamine reactions such as random rashes
- Chronic sinus congestion and long-lasting colds
- Cognitive impairment
- Brain fog
- Memory loss
- Difficulty finding words
- You go from zero to a hundred in a second.
- You get overwhelmed very quickly and sooner than you used to
- You can stay stuck in a sympathetic state of high alert for a long time.
- You may develop anxiety and depression.
- And your relationships can become volatile as struggle to return to feeling ok.
Very often, the diversity of reactions and the wide variety of mostly vague symptoms can make it difficult to pinpoint that the problem is mould. So you may also be dismissed by doctors, family members and friends alike, with an it’s-all-in-your-head attitude.
You may feel deeply misunderstood, isolated, and doubting whether what you are experiencing is even real.

How I help
During our 1:1 sessions and support group sessions, I support you to:
- Bring back safety to your body and mind
- Increase your awareness of how your nervous system works and how it speaks to you
- Build new neural pathways
- Discharge of any built-up energy that may have remained stuck from your illness and any traumatic events you may have experience in the past
Without addressing the nervous system in your mould illness/CIRS recovery, you may continue to struggle
- You may continue to feel isolated, misunderstood, helpless and hopeless
- You may keep thinking you’ll never heal
- You may find it difficult to fully stick to physical treatments and protocols (hello self-sabotage!)
- Your treatment may not yield the expected results as you’d hope, leading to even more expenses
- Your anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, relationship issues will continue to be overwhelming
